terms of service

last updated · 2 june 2026

// what this is

the trenches ("the service") is a journaling and habit-tracking app provided by the trenches team ("we", "us"). by using the service you ("you", "user") agree to these terms. if you don’t agree, don’t use the service.

// who can use it

the service is intended for users 13 and older. if you’re between 13 and the age of majority in your jurisdiction, you may only use the service with the consent of a parent or legal guardian.

you are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure. sign-in is via email magic link — if your email is compromised, so is your account.

// the free experience

the free tier requires no account. your habits, journal entries, letters, saved lines, and mantras live in your device’s local storage. they are not stored on our servers. clearing your browser’s site data permanently removes them. there is no way for us to recover free-tier data.

free tier limits — currently 3 habits, 5 active letters at a time, 15 saved quote lines — may change. existing data is not retroactively reduced if limits change, but you may need to upgrade or trim to add new entries.

// pro subscriptions

billing. pro is offered at $12.99/month or $107.88/year. billing is handled by stripe; we receive a customer id and subscription status from them but do not see or store your payment method.

auto-renewal. subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until canceled. you authorize stripe to charge the saved payment method on each renewal.

cancellation. you may cancel anytime from /account via the manage-subscription portal. cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. you keep pro features until that date.

refunds.by default, payments are non-refundable. we’ll consider refund requests case-by-case for billing mistakes, double-charges, or technical failure. email us within 14 days of the charge to request a refund.

price changes.if we change the price of pro, we’ll notify existing subscribers at least 30 days in advance. you can cancel before the change takes effect if you don’t agree.

// acceptable use

You agree not to:

attempt to access, probe, or test the vulnerability of the service or any related systems without our written permission.

use the service to generate content that violates anthropic’s acceptable use policy (since insights flow through their api).

resell, redistribute, or reverse-engineer the service.

misrepresent your identity or impersonate another user.

// your content

you own everything you write in the trenches — your journal, your letters, your mantras, your saved lines. we claim no ownership. when you generate an insight, your content is processed by anthropic’s api for the duration of that single request only, per the terms in our privacy policy.

// disclaimers

the trenches is provided “as is”. we make no warranty that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure. you use the service at your own risk.

the trenches is a journaling tool, not a substitute for medical, psychological, or professional advice. if you’re in crisis, please reach out to a qualified professional or emergency service.

// limitation of liability

to the maximum extent permitted by law, the trenches team is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

// changes to these terms

we may update these terms over time. material changes will be announced via email to pro users and a banner on the site. continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.

// governing law

these terms are governed by the laws of the state of california, usa, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. any disputes arising under these terms shall be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in los angeles county, california.
